Nikolai Arkadevich Rigelman (1817-1888) - Russian publicist and public figure. Chairman of the Kiev Slavic Charity Society and the Kiev branch of the Russian Musical Society.

Biography
Born in a family estate in the village of Andreevka, Chernihiv district. Orthodox. The son of the county leader of the nobility Arkady Alexandrovich Rigelman (b. 1778) and his wife Praskovya Grigoryevna Galagan (d. 1852). Grandson of Major General A.I. Rigelman , cousin of G.P. Galagan .
He received his higher education at the historical and philological department of the philosophical faculty of Moscow University , where he studied with Mikhail Katkov , Fedor Buslaev , Yuri Samarin , Mikhail Lyudogovsky . As a student, he participated in the translation into Russian of the work of French professor Demichel "History of the Middle Ages" (Moscow, 1836). At the end of the course of science with the title of full student, on November 22, 1839 he entered the service at the office of the Moscow Civil Governor . At the same time he continued his studies at the university and the following year he was awarded the degree of candidate of the 1st branch of the Faculty of Philosophy.
In 1843 he retired and went to Vienna to replenish his scientific education. He also visited Prague and Presburg , where he met with Slavic figures Hank and Stur . He returned to Russia in 1845 and on June 1, 1846 he entered the service at the office of the Kiev Military, Podolsky and Volyn Governor-General . On February 14, 1848, he was appointed secretary of the police chancellery. By order of the Governor General, from April 17 to September 14, 1848 he corrected the position of treasurer of the Kiev Institute of Noble Maidens .
He was appointed August 13, 1850 as the director of the schools of the Kiev province and the director of the Second Kiev Gymnasium ; in 1854, retired due to illness.
In 1864, he was invited to participate in the Commission on Peasant Affairs under the Kiev Governor General. From August 13, 1848, he was a full member of the Kiev Commission for the analysis of ancient acts . In 1848-1851, under the editorship of Rigelman, two volumes of " Chronicles of the Events of Southwest Russia in the 17th Century " by Samuel Velichko were published. He was also a full member of the Society of lovers of Russian literature at Moscow University since 1860.
In the 1840s, he began to be published in the Slavophile magazine Moskvityan , in 1846-1847 Rigelman's Letters from Vienna, devoted to the life of the Slavs in Austria , were published in the Moscow Collection . He was especially close to M.P. Pogodin and I.S. Aksakov . Later published in the newspaper " Day ". Having completed his second train abroad in 1857-1858 and the third in 1867, he published a separate book, Three Trips Abroad (1871). In the 1870s, he led a polemic with Ukrainophiles on the pages of “ Kievlyanin ” and “ Russky Vestnik ”, in particular, in 1875, he placed in his last critical article “Modern Ukrainophilism”.
From the moment he was founded, he was an active member of the Kiev Slavic Charity Society , and in 1875 he was unanimously elected its chairman. Repeatedly donated significant amounts of his funds to the publication of books on Slavic studies. So, almost all of the Slavic Yearbooks published by the society were printed at its expense. In addition, thanks to the efforts of Rigelman, the society helped many people in need, provided material support to the Galician Russophiles and contributed to the publication of the Lviv “ Word ”, as well as facilitated the publication of many publications, among which “An Essay on the History of Czech Literature” by A. Stepovich and “A Brief Overview history of the Czech people ” Fr. Palacky (translated and preface by N.P. Zaderatsky ). In 1885, during the celebration of the Cyril and Methodius anniversary, he donated 10 thousand rubles for the needs of society, which amounted to the untouchable "Rigelman capital", "the interest from which should be used to promote the dissemination of knowledge of the common Russian literary language between Slavs living outside the Russian limits state ".
When the branch of the Russian Musical Society was opened in Kiev in 1863, he was elected a member of the directorate, from which he dropped out in 1871. In 1879 he returned to the directorate at the request of V.V. Pukhalsky , and in 1882 he became chairman of the Kiev branch of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, which he held until his death.
He died on May 21 ( June 2 ), 1888 from an apoplexy strike.
