Biography
Secondary education in the School of the Cross (Kreuzschule), where he was a student of Christian Theodore Weiling; in 1822-1825 he studied in Leipzig with Johann Gottrifd Shift and already at a young age composed motets and cantatas . After completing his studies, he taught at the Carl Justus Blochmann Institute and from 1828 was temporary, and from 1830 to 1875 a permanent cantor in the Dresden Church of the Cross. Among his students was, in particular, Friedrich Baumfelder. For some time he was the conductor of the Dresden male choir. In 1870 he became a member of the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm . He was buried in the cemetery Trinitatisfridhof.
He wrote many motets, cantatas, masses and Te Deum , also oratorios, trios, sonatas, polonaises, piano pieces, songs, two operas. In addition, he was a cantor in the church of St.. Sofia and the Frauenkirche church in Dresden. His patriotic songs for the male choir: “Der Sängersaal”, “Burschenfahrten”, “Soldatenleben” were especially famous.
In 1876 a chorus was created in Dresden. In 1890, a street was named after him; today, monuments have been erected in various cities of Germany (the first busts were installed in Dresden in 1886 and in Konigstein in 1887).
