History

Important dates are the founding of the canonical monastery of St. Augustine, the monastery of Neunkirchen am Brande in 1314, and the assignment of the status of a trading city in 1410. Neunkirchen in 1803, together with the Bishopric of Bamberg, became part of Bavaria. Between 1886 and 1963 a railway was built from Neunkirchen to Eschenau.

After World War II, many refugees settled in Neunkirchen, and after the founding of Siemens AG in Erlangen, the city of Neunkirchen again experienced an increase in population. Numerous suburbs were built around the historic city center. Neunkirchen is also home to a number of industrial and trading companies. The largest industrial employer is the factory of automobile bridges and gearboxes, Neunkirchner Achsenfabrik (НВС).
