Shanin, Moshe

He was born in the family of a chess teacher and a mathematics teacher. He graduated from the Arkhangelsk College of Economics, Statistics and Informatics , specialty - accountant.

He worked as an administrator of a computer club, a seller, a glass washer cleaner. Since 2007 - an individual entrepreneur .

In his youth, Mikhail was fond of science fiction, but such authors as Isaak Babel , Boris Pilnyak , Artyom Veselyy , Yuri Olesha had a final influence on his further work; the style of which he later focused. As a creative pseudonym, the author chose the name of his great-grandfather.

The first story (Betelgeuse) was written on December 31, 2004. The first publication (the story “Do not give up hope”) took place in No. 12 of the magazine “October” for 2006. In 2013, with a selection of short stories, Levoplosskovskiy reached the final of the Debut Literary Prize. In 2014, with a selection of short stories, Pravoplosskovskiy reached the final of the Debut Literary Prize and became a laureate. The author of the widely cited short story, First Banned, also known as the Shanin Triangle.

The author’s largest works are 4 cycle of stories: “Levoploskovskie” - a cycle of stories with through-heroes about the inhabitants of the village of Levoplosskaya in the Ustyansky district of the Arkhangelsk region, “Pravoplosskovskie” - a continuation of the cycle “Levoplosskowski” about the inhabitants of a neighboring village, “Sovetskaya Street” - a cycle of “urban” stories about the eccentric inhabitants of one street, including the author himself (the autobiographical story “My Seventeen”), “I start running” conditionally combines several stories - one with a few fantastic assumptions and others are plotless, still others are connected by a common hero. The stories are based on allusions to real events and real people.

Shanin's Triangle

“Shanin’s Triangle” is the unofficial name for the short story “First Banned”. The reason for writing the story was rumors and statements about dubious initiatives aimed at removing some letters from the Russian language, including the message that V. V. Zhirinovsky proposes to exclude the letter “s” from the Russian alphabet ^[1] .

Of the stories that I managed to read last year, the undisputed leader of the year seems to me to be the selection of Moshe Shanin’s “Levoplosskovskie” stories in the May issue of October magazine (this story also includes the story “Ivan Kosorotik” - “New World” No. 12). A cycle of short stories and tales about everyday life in the village of the Arkhangelsk region would give a young writer a keen observer of local life and speech, if not for the degree of their literary processing. Now it’s no longer possible to make out whether these people were actually seen — sleeping, hiding with a bicycle, setting fire to school, just to move the life of the village off the ground, dying in a pack of rabid wolves — or created by the author’s intuition, which highlighted the routine from such an angle that at least laugh, at least do not live. The stories of Moshe Shanin unwind the reader for deep sympathy and tear the soul apart by the most economical and accurate means. And at the same time, they do not let us forget for a minute that this damned and curious life is only material for the “Levoplossky” myth, which does not so much portray a corner of Russia, but expresses the author’s feeling of it, post-Soviet, dying, wild corners ^[5] .
