Biography
Born April 29, 1853 in Rome, nephew of Cardinal Giacomo .
Antonelli was the model of a new generation of Italian diplomats at the end of the 19th century . He worked in the Horn of Africa , was the Ambassador of Italy to Ethiopia during her reign of Emperor Menelik II .
One of the authors of the international treaty , which was concluded between the Kingdom of Italy and the Ethiopian Empire on May 2, 1889 and signed at the Ethiopian camp in the city of Uchchali (Uchchalli, Vucale) Menelik II and the ambassador to Addis Ababa, Count Pietro Antonelli. [1] At his initiative, northern Ethiopia was called Eritrea . [2]
He was elevated to the rank of Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs in 1894. Appointed Minister of Italy in Buenos Aires on January 12, 1895 , and then in Rio de Janeiro on December 27, 1897 .
He died in his prime on January 11, 1901 on a ship on his return to Italy.
It is interesting that in his youth, around 1870, Antonelli had an affair with the Russian artist Maria Bashkirtseva .
