Biography

Born November 11, 1918 in Priboi near Lopar. He studied at the Priboy and Bielina schools. In 1938 he entered the law faculty of the Belgrade student. From his youth he was interested in the revolutionary movement, a member of the CPU since 1939.

After the capitulation of Yugoslavia in the April War, he went underground in Semberia and became a member of the anti-German movement. In August 1941, he joined the Semberian partisan company and began to conduct sabotage, cutting off power lines, telegraph and telephone; blocking roads, attacking guard posts and engaging in other activities. Under pressure from the forces of the enemy with his company went to Machva.

During the offensive of the Germans and collaborators in the Uzhitsky Republic, Veselin took part in fierce battles on Vidoewitz Mountain. During the fighting, almost the entire composition of the company was killed, including Brother Veselin Branko. The remnants of the company went to Bosna, through Vlasenitsa and Shekovichi climbed onto Mayevitsa and joined the Maevitsky partisan detachment. Veselin himself was the last to reach the mountain, since he had been treated at the hospital for a long time. In Shekovichi he was engaged in the restoration of the destroyed economy and cultural and educational activities.

In February 1942, Veselin Gavrich and a group of couriers arrested Chetnik at the Maevitsa mountain. Not convincing him to go to their side, they began to torture Gavrich, and after fruitless attempts to execute him.

On November 27, 1953, by the decree of Josip Broz, Tito Veselin Gavrich was posthumously awarded the title of People’s Hero of Yugoslavia.
