In the lonely hour

In the Lonely Hour is the debut studio album of English singer Sam Smith , released June 17, 2014 at Capitol Records . The disc included hits such as “ Money on My Mind ” and “ Stay with Me ”, which became No. 1 in the UK; the second of them became a world super-hit, entering the top ten best singles in 20 countries, including No. 2 in the USA. The third hit, “ I'm Not the Only One, ” reached No. 3 in England and No. 5 in the USA. Even before the release of the album In the Lonely Hour received positive reviews from music critics. The disc was a commercial success worldwide, reached No. 1 in the UK, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, Sweden, became No. 2 in Australia, Canada, Denmark, Denmark, Norway and the USA. At the 57th Grammy Awards, he was nominated in the prestigious Album of the Year category and won the Best Vocal Pop Album category. The song “ Stay with Me ” won two Grammy Awards in the categories “Record of the Year” and “Song of the Year” [12] . The album became the second best-seller of 2014 in the United Kingdom and the third best-seller in the USA. By February 2015, more than 3,390,500 copies were sold [13] .

History

On May 28, 2014, the album In the Lonely Hour debuted at No. 1 in the British charts The Official Albums Chart , with a circulation of approximately 20,000 copies [14] . In the first 5 weeks of release, 228,000 copies were sold in the UK. [15] By December 2014, the circulation exceeded 1 million copies [16] . He became the second best-seller of 2014 in the UK with a circulation of 1,248,000 per year [17] . By February 2015, In the Lonely Hour had a circulation of 1.4 million copies in the United Kingdom [18] .

In the USA, In the Lonely Hour debuted on July 5, 2014 at No. 2 of the Billboard 200 , with a circulation of 182,000 copies per week. The album retained second place and the next week with a circulation of 67,000 copies (in the amount of 233,000 in two weeks) [20] . By the end of the year, the disc received Platinum status and a circulation of 1,210,000 copies in the United States, making it the third best seller of the year after the 1989 albums ( Taylor Swift ) and Frozen [21] [22] [23] . By February 6, 2015, the circulation reached 1.34 million copies in the United States [24] . In the United States, the singles circulation was 4.4 million, including 3.4 million singles “Stay with Me”.

Album In the Lonely Hour received positive and moderate reviews from music critics and online publications. The aggregator of reviews and reviews, the Metacritic website gave the album a rating of 62 (out of 100), based on 24 critics, recording “generally positive reviews” [6] [25] .
