History

Before the revolution of 1917, the building of the future museum belonged to the family of Ural artists Khudoyarov. In 1982, the house was moved from Gorky Street (formerly Beregovoi) to the territory of the ethnographic complex on Tagilskaya Street 24 and restored to a new place with the replacement of log fragments. For the sake of reviving and preserving the traditions of Nizhny Tagil and the Urals, in 1991 in the old house of the Khudoyarovs a tray museum was created, which later became an integral part of the Nizhny Tagil museum association of the Gornozavodskaya Ural Museum-Reserve.

Museum Exposition

The museum’s collection includes unique works of the masters of the Tagil lacquer painting on metal accumulated over 265 years, shows the life and work of the famous artists of the Khudoyarov dynasty, talks about the manufacturing techniques and Tagil painting of trays [1] . The collection mainly includes trays and household items of the Khudoyarov family. The museum’s collection was compiled from the gifts of the inhabitants of Nizhny Tagil, proceeds from NTMK and other enterprises of the city, as well as from targeted collections of museum employees. Currently, the museum's exposition reflects the history of Tagil tray craft from the 18th century to the present.

On the ground floor of the museum genuine instruments and devices for the manufacture of metal products, finished products with artistic painting and historical documents containing information on the origin and development of the tray industry in Nizhny Tagil are presented.

The hall of the second floor contains exhibits of the works of artists Khudoyarov, the development of tray craft from the middle of the XIX to the end of the XX century. An exposition highlighting the life and work of original serf artists, compiled on the basis of archival data and real authentic exhibits. In this room you can see painted metal products and genuine examples of easel painting on metal and canvas [2] .

The history of fishing in the 19th and 20th centuries is conveyed in the image of products of those times. The museum also exhibits documentary materials on Tagil artels of the 1920s - 1930s.

The museum often hosts workshops on painting trays.

The museum’s iron lacquer collection is of great value to researchers (historians, art historians, metal technologists). This unique collection is the largest in volume, diverse and in content. The museum presents the names of famous masters and products of “varnish” workshops of the 18th — 20th centuries: Khudoyarovs, Perezolovs, Dubasnikovs, Golovanovs, Obukhovs. It included the largest collection of works by A.V. Afanasyeva . The museum regularly hosts exhibitions on the Tagil tray, including solo exhibitions by contemporary authors.

Each year, specially for the Russian Expo Arms exhibition of arms, about 1000 trays are made as branded souvenir products [3] .

The collection of the Tagil Tray Museum is constantly updated with new works by masters of this craft. In Nizhny Tagil, the annual city competition of decorative arts “Master of the Year” is held, as a result of which the best works of the winning authors go to the museum’s collection.
