Biography

Blagoy Ivanov was born on October 9, 1986 in the town of Sandanski, Blagoevgrad region . He began to actively engage in martial arts at the age of seven by the instruction of his father, the champion of Bulgaria in sambo. He practiced sambo and judo at the Lokomotiv sports club, and later moved to CSKA. Currently she is training at Absolut club in Sofia.

Amateur career

He achieved his first serious success in judo in 2003, when he won the junior judo championship in the Balkan countries. A year later, he won bronze medals at two international tournaments in Turkey and Hungary, a year later he won the Bulgarian Youth Championship and finished fifth at the European Youth Championship in Zagreb. In 2007, Ivanov became the heavyweight champion of Bulgaria and the Balkan countries at the adult level, after which he took the seventh place at the European Youth Championship in Salzburg. He tried to qualify for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing , but was unable to do so, and soon stopped competing in judo.

In Sambo, Ivanov first declared himself in 2006 at the World Championship in Sports Sambo in Sofia, where he managed to reach the semi-finals stage in the light heavyweight and received the bronze medal award. In 2008, at the world championship in St. Petersburg, he played in the heavy weight category in combat sambo and became the champion, and in the semifinals he defeated the famous Russian Fedor Emelyanenko , and in the decisive match he took precedence over the German Janos Stefan . For this outstanding achievement he was awarded the honorary title “Master of Sports of Bulgaria of international class”.

Professional career

Blagoi Ivanov began performing in professional fights under the mixed rules in 2007, in the debut duel by technical knockout defeated Sambo's compatriot Kamen Georgiev . Then he took over another sambist Yangcho Dimitrov , while his next fight was declared invalid due to a broken ring. In 2009, he received an invitation from the well-known Japanese promotion World Victory Road and went to Japan, where he won a split decision from the local fighter Kajuiuki Fujita , although he broke both his hands in the first and second rounds. The following year was marked by another victory over Bulgarian Svetoslav Zakharyev in Sofia.

Having a record of four victories without a single defeat, Ivanov signed a long-term contract with the prestigious American organization Bellator , in the debut bout by technical knockout defeated American William Penn, then took part in the fifth season of the heavyweight grand prix - strangled by the “ guillotine ” of another American, Zack Jensen . Also in 2011, he conducted one fight in Russia, ahead of schedule defeated veteran MMA Ricco Rodriguez .

In 2012, Bellator Ivanov, in the semi-final of the heavyweights grand prix, was to meet Brazilian Tiagu Santos , but shortly before the fight in one of the Sofia nightclubs, he received a heavy knife wound to the heart, causing him to be on the verge of life and death. Doctors fought for his life for six hours; in total, he spent 86 days in a coma, but eventually he went on the mend and returned to training [1] .

After almost two years of rehabilitation in 2013, Blagoy Ivanov still returned to professional sports and in two rating battles Bellator overcame two little-known Americans, Manny Laru and Keith Bell. He took part in the tenth season of a heavy weight grand prix: in the quarter finals, by unanimous decision, he took over Rich Hale , and in the semifinals he won against Lavar Johnson in the semifinals . In the decisive final match, he met with Russian Alexander Volkov , the former champion of the organization, and lost to him by strangling from behind from behind, thus suffering the first defeat in his professional career.

In 2015, he signed a contract with the American organization World Series of Fighting and in June became the heavyweight champion, beating Canadian Guillotine Rama.
