Biography
Born in a small provincial town on the border of Serbia and Ottoman Macedonia . Early left an orphan. Until 1902 he studied law at the University of Belgrade . Then he lived for some time in Paris (1903-1904).
Returning to his homeland, he worked in the capital as a customs officer and in the tax service. During World War I, he lived in the city of Nis in Montenegro, where he was arrested by the Austrians and placed in an internment camp in Bosnia. After the war, he worked in the arts department of the Ministry of Education. He died in Belgrade in 1927.
Creativity
He began to engage in literary activities in his student years. The period from 1898 to 1913 turned out to be the most fruitful in literary terms, when the writer published several books of short stories - “From the Old Gospel” (1899), “God's People” (1902), “Old Days” (1902), and the novel “Bad Blood” (1911), the drama "Koshtana" (1902) and "Tashana" (1912). During the World War and after it - Stankovych did not create any significant artistic work.
The novels and stories of B. Stankovic are closely connected with his native land, depict the life of the people of Southern Serbia. The writer remained committed to the old patriarchal customs, the destruction of which in Old Serbia was observed with regret and sadness. But in his works, Stankovic painted the old life without idealization, truthfully telling about the fate of representatives of all walks of life - landowners, merchants, beggars, artisans, gypsies, "God's people." His most famous novel, Bad Blood (1911), tells of the fall of the old landowner clans and the triumph of the "new masters of life" who became rich during the war merchants. With special warmth and penetration, Stanković spoke about the difficult share of the Serbian woman.
Stankovic’s merit lies in the fact that he discovered a little-known world in literature and showed it extremely fresh and original, enriching Serbian realism with the mastery of psychological analysis.
The work of B. Stankovich is often compared with Russian writers, especially with Dostoevsky and, to a certain extent, with Maxim Gorky .
