Etain

According to the plot of the film " Centurion " ^[3] , the mute ^[4] warrior Etain is presented as the protector of the Picts from capture by the Roman conquerors, whose representatives are the notorious Ninth Legion . In the course of the film, the events of which unfold in 117 AD, it turns out that the motives of the Pictish girl are not only purely patriotic. She comes from a Celtic brigant tribe ^[5] . As it turned out, the Etain family was massacred by Roman soldiers, and her tongue was cut off ^[6] and raped, leaving her to die. The picts sheltered her and taught her martial art. By the beginning of the film, Etain poses as a ranger working for the Romans and leads the Ninth Legion to a trap where the Legion is destroyed ^[7] .

Character Creation

In the original scenario, the filmmakers conceived Etain as the half-sister of Arianna, performed by Imogen Poots. The ending of the film was also different: after the battle for Fort Quintus ( Michael Fassbender ) forced Etain to retreat, after which he himself went to Arianna. In the end, they fight Arianna with Etain, and Arianna kills her ^[9] .

Olga Kurylenko, who played Etain, had never before ridden a horse ^[10] . In addition, she had to train a lot to master the role of a deadly warrior ^[9] .

Filmmaker Neil Marshall himself, in an interview with Empire magazine, said that Etain is the epitome of retribution for the Romans. ^[11]

Etain, be my anger. Send their bodies to hell, and bring their heads to me ... When the picts chase, they do not stop. They can run for hours, ride for days, occasionally stopping to eat and sleep. Etain, like a she-wolf, was taught to hunt from birth. Part of it is reason, part of instinct. Most film critics. who appreciated the film, reacted negatively to it, criticizing the low level of sophistication of both the plot and the characters, however, Olga Kurylenko’s game in the image of Etain was positively received. Interfax in its review gave a bad assessment to the film " Centurion ", noting that the only successful and well-developed character was Etain performed by Olga Kurylenko ^[13] . In 2012, LOVEFiLM , a legal resource for watching movies on the Internet, conducted a survey among subscribers and ranked the most “bloodthirsty” movie heroines, in which Etain took 10th place out of ten ^[14] .

Perhaps the film saves only the expressive, hateful look of the tracker Etain, played by Olga Kurylenko.

The reason for this embitterment is that the Romans raped the girl in her childhood and cut off her tongue, perhaps for the reasons that actress Kurylenko has not yet managed to get rid of the Ukrainian accent, just as she has not been able to learn to ride. The Celtic ranger sits in the saddle like a bag of potatoes, and the authors have to make sure that she rarely gets into the frame on the general plan and try to look for something large - a tragic fate and an extraordinary character, portraying which the actress looks with a beech and frowns in exactly the same way in the same way as in Quantum of Solace .

Olga Kurylenko, all in the skins of wild animals, is painted gray and blue, and her eyes are summed up with bold black arrows. It is also interesting that if in “Quantum of Solace” she played a girl who spoke with a wild accent, then her heroine is generally dumb.
