Getting

  • Passing hydrogen sulfide through an acidic solution of polonium (II) salt.
PoCl2+H2S→PoS↓+2HCl{\ displaystyle {\ mathsf {PoCl_ {2} + H_ {2} S \ {\ xrightarrow {}} \ PoS \ downarrow + 2HCl}}}

Physical Properties

Polonium sulfide forms black crystals.

Not soluble in water, p PR = 28.26, and ethanol .

Chemical Properties

  • Decomposes on heating:
PoS→500oCPo+S{\ displaystyle {\ mathsf {PoS \ {\ xrightarrow {500 ^ {o} C}} \ Po + S}}}
  • Reacts with concentrated acids:
PoS+2HCl→PoCl2+H2S↑{\ displaystyle {\ mathsf {PoS + 2HCl \ {\ xrightarrow {}} \ PoCl_ {2} + H_ {2} S \ uparrow}}}

Application

  • Used in the isolation and purification of polonium.
