The community is located in the Swabian government district in the Upper Allgäu at the northern border of the Allgäu Alps at an altitude of 750 m above sea level (separate parts of the city up to 1100 m), at the foot of Mount Grünten (1738 m). The Iller River with a tributary of the Ostrach flows through the city. It is the southernmost city in Germany.
Subordinate to the administrative district of Swabia . The population is 21,311 people (06/30/2013). Covers an area of 46.62 km². The official code is 09 7 80 139 .

Industry and infrastructure
The following large industrial enterprises are available:
- Voith Turbo BHS Getriebe GmbH is a manufacturer of gearboxes and related equipment.
- BHS Sonthofen is a manufacturer of technological equipment (industrial filters, mixers, etc.).
- Dr. Werner Röhrs KG is a metallurgical company.
Brewing:
Of great importance are dairy production and tourism. The city has 2 military units and an officer school. Kindergartens, schools, gymnasium, vocational schools. 7 large supermarkets, Saturday market. Lots of hotels, pubs and restaurants.
