Born in 1837 in Manzanillo in the family of a wealthy landowner. As a child, he attended a private school, and then was sent to study commercial business in Germany, where he studied in Bremen and Hamburg . Upon his return to Cuba, he took part in the founding of the Masonic lodge.
With the beginning of the first war for independence of Cuba, he joined the rebel forces, and during the war he gradually grew in rank, eventually becoming a major general. After the rebel leadership was forced to negotiate with the Spanish authorities, and eventually signed the Zanhon treaty , Generals Manuel de Jesus Calvar and Antonio Maseo did not agree with this decision during the “protest in Baragua” and formed an interim government that elected Manuel Calvara president.
