Born in the family of a doctor Christopher Munte, his children also included a historian - Hartwig Andreas Munte, writer Margrethe Munte and officer Karl Oscar Munte. Among the relatives were also historians and artists. In 1863, Gerhard was sent to Christiania to study medicine, but since he showed artistic abilities, his father recommended that he engage in art professionally. From 1870 he studied under Johan Eckersberg, and until 1874 he worked with M. Müller and K. Bergslin . In 1874-1876, Munte studied under A. Aachenbach in Dusseldorf . In 1877, G. Munte settled in Munich , where he worked until 1882. His works were exhibited at the World Exhibitions in Paris in 1900 and 1904.
After returning to Norway, in 1886 he married 17-year-old Sigrun Sandberg. The marriage was unsuccessful, in addition, Sigrun herself had artistic ambitions. In 1888, the Munte couple lost their unborn child, they had no more children. He built a family house in Lusaker, which was destroyed by fire in 1982. In the same period, G. Munte worked in the selection committee of an art school and from 1890 became a member of the Council of the Norwegian National Gallery.
In 1896-1899, Gerhard Münte received an order to illustrate the “ Circle of the Earth ” by Snorri Sturluson , working together with E. Verenskjöld . Together with his wife, he took up arts and crafts, in particular, tapestries . In 1905, his wife’s romance with Fridtjof Nansen began , as a result, Munte portrayed him on one of the tapestries in the image of a troll [1] . In the same year, the couple tried to reunite and made a joint trip to Copenhagen, Dusseldorf and Paris. In 1907, Munte made a trip to Venice. After 1911, relations between Sigrun Munte and Nansen became permanent, and in 1918 Gerhard and Sigrun Munte divorced. The artist spent his last years in Lusaker, where he died in 1929.
