Black-tailed hutia [1] ( lat. Mysateles melanurus ) is a species of rodent family of hautea. Endemic of Cuba.

This species is very similar in size to a chain-tail tail , reaches about 30 cm in length, differing in a darker color of the fur, a long tail can be almost black. The fur is thicker and longer, the tail is more fluffy. On the head are almost pointed ears and small eyes.
The species is common in some regions of the five eastern provinces. He lives in the mountains of the Sierra Maestra , where his population is larger. Also common in the municipality of Gis in the province of Granma .
It is found only in primary and secondary forests. The number is rapidly decreasing due to the destruction and fragmentation of the habitat , poaching [2] .
