Biography
Yankiel Leon was born on April 26, 1982 in the city of Hobabo , Las Tunas province. He achieved his first serious boxing success in 2000 when he won a gold medal at the Junior World Championships in Budapest . Two years later, in the flyweight category, he won the standings of the Giraldo Cordoba Cardin national tournament, where he defeated Yuriorkis Gamboa , the future world champion among professionals, in the final.
Subsequently, Leon played in the bantamweight category and for a long time could not get into the main squad of the Cuban national team because of too high competition from Guillermo Rigondo - a total of eight times met him in the ring and lost in all eight cases. When Rigondo was injured in 2007, Leon had a chance to win the national championship, but this time he lost to the young Yasniel Toledo in the semifinals.
Despite many failures, in 2008 Leon Yankiel still became the champion of Cuba in the lightest weight category. As a member of the national team, he performed at the team World Cup in Moscow and won a gold medal there. Thanks to a series of successful performances, he was awarded the right to defend the country's honor at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing - on the way to the finals in the bantamweight category he defeated such famous boxers as Kanat Abutalipov , Vorapoya Petchkuma and Bruno Julie , nevertheless, in the decisive match with a score of 5: 16 was defeated by the Mongol Enkhbatyn Badar-Uugan .
After the Beijing Olympics, Leon remained in the main squad of the Cuban national team and continued to take part in major international tournaments. So, in 2009, he defended his championship title at the Cuban championship and visited the World Cup in Milan, from where he brought a bronze dignity award - in the lightweight semifinal with a score of 0-5, he lost to Bulgarian Detelin Dalakliev . Soon he decided to end his sports career.
