Biography
Born January 25, 1831 in the family of a Lutheran priest. Since 1841 he studied at a secondary school in Gronau , where his father was the head of the local Lutheran parish. He studied linguistics and philosophy at the University of Gottingen . He also studied physics, chemistry and botany. Three years later, he interrupted his studies and moved to the UK, where he began to study languages. In 1855, at the age of 24, he published an English-Turkish dictionary. Since 1857, he was a private teacher of the princess, the future writer and Queen of Romania, Elizabeth von Neuwied. From 1856 to 1896 he worked as a volunteer translator in the British Bible Society. He was engaged in the translation of the Bible into various languages and dialects. In 1873 he received a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Gottingen. Since 1874 he lived in Norway, where he popularized the Norwegian language . In 1885 he published a collection of poems in Norwegian Frie Viso ifraa Vigguin (Free Songs from the Mountains).
He wrote in 30 languages, spoke 62 languages, and knew about 200 languages and dialects to varying degrees. He spoke out in defense of the national and cultural rights of Armenians , Poles , Bulgarians , Finns and Luzhans . In 1877 he wrote a collection of poems “Serbske stucki” in the Upper Luzhitsky language.
In 1875 he lived in Klaipeda, where he studied the Lithuanian language . Together with Lithuanian public figures, he advocated for the rights of the Lithuanian language in East Prussia. He founded in Tilsit the Lithuanian Literary Society (Lietuvių literatūros draugija), whose members were well-known European linguists, in particular Adalbert Bezenberger, Philippe Fortunatov , Eduardas Gizyavijus, Jan Karlovich, Ivan Baudouin de Courtenay and Georg Nesselman . He wrote the song “Lietuviais esame mes gimę” (Lithuanians we were born) in Lithuanian, which became the anthem of local Lithuanians in East Prussia. In 1883, he translated an excerpt from Hamlet into Lithuanian. In 1879 and 1881 he participated in the elections for deputies of the Prussian Landtag as a representative of the Lithuanian national minority. In 1898, he tried to become a deputy from Tilsit-Ragnit County.
He was a member of the European Union of Pacifists. In 1898 he published a collection of poems on pacifist themes in German and French .
He died on December 16, 1904 in Oslo. He was buried in the Leder cemetery in the city of Gronau.
