McCarthy, Sheila

McCarthy was born and raised in Toronto, where at the age of six she began performing on the stage. She graduated from Victorian University , and then continued to study acting, moving to New York ^[2] . Upon returning to Canada, she began performing on the main stage, winning the 1983 Dora Mavor Moore Award for Best Actress in a Play ^[2] . In the following decades, McCarthy continued to play leading roles in theatrical productions, alternating them with work on the screen.

Over her career, McCarthy has played over one hundred roles in television and film. She won two awards from the Canadian Film and Television Academy Gini for Best Actress; for the films " I heard the singing of mermaids " (1987) and The Lotus Eaters (1993) ^[3] . For playing in the film Bright Angel (1990), McCarthy was nominated for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role ^[3] . For his television roles, McCarthy was nominated five times at Gemini , winning one statuette in 1998 for her lead role in the TV series Emily from New Moon (1998-2000). From 2007 to 2012, she starred in the Canadian sitcom "Little Mosque on the Prairies."
