Life and creativity
Little is known about the artist’s life circumstances. José N. de la Escalera was a self-taught painter, but his works are a development of the creative work of Andalusian artists of the XVII – XVIII centuries, primarily the Seville school of painting and Bartolome Estaban Murillo . Escalera created paintings mainly on religious themes, the most famous of which are “ Saint Joseph and Child ” and “Holy Trinity”, kept in the National Museum of Fine Arts in Havana. He was also engaged in painting churches and cathedrals (the dome of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Rosario, in 1760-1766). He was also known as an excellent portrait painter (one of his best portraits - the famous historian Carlos Manuel Tremes-i-Gauvin).
He painted his paintings mainly with oil paints.
