Cardenas ( Spanish: Cárdenas ) is a city and municipality in the province of Matanzas , Cuba . It is the 15th largest city in the country. According to 2010 data, the population of the municipality is 136,722 people [2] ; according to 2007, it numbered 103,087 people [3] . The area of the municipality is 577.9 km² [4] . According to the data for 2012, the population of the city itself is 88 987 people.

Located on the north coast of the island, on the shores of the Gulf of Cardenas, about 175 km east of Havana . The city was founded in 1828 [5] ; already in 1861 its population totaled 12,910 people. In 1841, a railway was built that connected the city with other parts of the island, which served as an incentive for further development. Cardenas was one of the first cities in Cuba to receive electricity, public transportation, telegraph and telephone.
