- April 22 - approved the charter of the Russian Technical Society .
- May 23 - approved the charter of the Russian Historical Society .
- July 27 - The Great Eastern company successfully laid a transatlantic telegraph cable between Ireland and North America, after which the transatlantic electric telegraph was launched [1] .
- Founded Romanian Academy .
- A fossilized human skull was discovered in Calaveras, California, USA, allegedly proving the simultaneous existence of humans and mastodons . The find became one of the most famous archaeological falsifications, and an article about it was published in the 11th edition of Encyclopedia Britannica .

- December 16 - Daniil Kirillovich Zabolotny , Ukrainian and Soviet bacteriologist , President of the All-Ukrainian Academy of Sciences (1928–1929), Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR ( 1929 ).
- Vera Balts - one of the first in Russia women soil scientists, geographers.

- April 10 - Matvey Matveyevich Gusev , a Russian astronomer , one of the pioneers of astrophysics .
- July 20 - Georg Riemann , a German mathematician , one of the creators of non-Euclidean geometry (born 1826 ).
- August 3 - Frederick Karl Hermann Kruse , German historian.
- September 7 - Alexander Petrovich Zernin , Russian historian, professor at Kharkov University .
- October 13 - Hopkins, William , English geologist and mathematician.
- November 20 - Otto Karl Berg , German botanist and pharmacologist of Polish origin.
- December 1 - George Everest , a Welsh geographer . A year before his death, his name was given to the Pico XV Royal Geographical Society, which is now considered the highest peak of the world, although Everest itself was against this appropriation.
