In 1841 he graduated from St. Petersburg Pedagogical Institute , then for two years he additionally trained at the University of Leipzig . From 1844 he was appointed adjunct professor of Greek and Roman literature at Kharkov University , where he defended his master's thesis “De mundiciis veterum Graecorum et Romanorum” (1847). In 1858, Yurgevich was appointed professor (and at the same time inspector) of the Richelieu Lyceum in Odessa and, having moved to this city, took part in the works of the local Society of History and Antiquities , in which he was a full member from 1858, from 1875 to 1883 as secretary and 1883 to 1898 vice-president [2] ; He was elected on October 20, 1883 [3] . From 1864 to 1887 he was an extraordinary and then (from 1867) an ordinary professor and a student inspector [4] at the University of Novorossiysk . In 1868-1871 he was the dean of the history department at this university.
In Odessa, besides his doctoral thesis “De Jovis Lycaei natura cognominisque huius ratione” (1866), he lectured on ancient Roman literature, the history of state and religious institutions of ancient Rome, collaborated in the “Notes” of the Odessa Society of History and Antiquities, worked on the history of the Genoese colonies on the south of Russia, Greek epigraphy and ethnological issues, especially about the role of the Hungarians in the ethnography of the south of Russia. Collecting and copying Genoese inscriptions and coins began after traveling to the Crimea, where he studied buildings that have survived from the Genoa period in Sudak, Theodosia and Balaclava (in 1861 and 1873), and also after visiting Olbia (1865), during which he focused on epigraphic material. Subsequently, he increased the range of his epigraphic studies, extending them to inscriptions on amorphous pens.
The result of all these studies was a series of works by Yurgevich, published in the "Notes of the Odessa Society of History and Antiquities": for example, about the Genoa coins (1869; the subject of the research is the history of the Genoese colonization of the Black Sea region and, in particular, the coinage of Kafa; Genoese collections of coins of the northern Black Sea coast), on foreign names in the inscriptions of Olbia, the Bosporus and the other cities of the northern coast of the Pontus (including where it is proved that the Scythians and Sarmatians - different peoples, and the former do not belong to the " Aryan tribe"), about the imaginary Norman names in Russian history, the seals found in Chersonesos in 1884 . In the last two articles, Yurgevich tried to prove the significant influence of the “Finno-Ugric-Hungarian group” on the south of Russia. In 1884, Yurgevich participated in the preparation and conduct of the VI Archaeological Congress in Odessa, speaking on it "Notes on some areas of the Novorossiysk Territory deserving of archaeological research." During the Odessa period of his life, more than 50 articles and studies in which he tried to cover the entire history of the Odessa Society of History and Antiquities. The base material for a number of his studies were museum collections. From 1883 to 1893 he was in charge of the museum of the Odessa Society of History and Antiquities; in 1886-1892, three editions of a guidebook for this museum were published under his editorship.
The largest works are: “Genoa inscriptions in the Crimea”; “Charters for the Genoese colonies in the Black Sea” (published by the author in Russian and Latin; this work brought him fame abroad); "On the imaginary Norman names in Russian history" (1863); "F. A. Beck (1868); "New inscriptions of the Genoese"; “On the names of foreign Greek cities on the northern coast of Evksinsky Pont” (1872); "On the coins of the Genoese"; "The latest archaeological discoveries in the Crimea" (1875). In addition, in 1877 he completed translations of the 7th and 11th books of Geography by Strabo .
