Trebellius Pollion

Trebellius Pollio is an ancient Roman writer, one of the six authors of The History of Augustus . In this work, he is credited with authorship of biographies of two Valerian ( Valerian I and Valerian II ), two Gallienes (one of which he calls “the most despicable of women”), “divine Claudius ”, as well as small biographies of thirty tyrants .

It is believed that the literary activity of Trebellius dates back to the time of Diocletian (on the other hand, German Dessau in 1889 determined the time for writing the work from 370 to 400, as well as he believed that the author of the work is one, and all six authors are actually fictitious ): he devoted his work to the co-ruler of Diocletian Constantius Chlorus , and with the help of enormous stretches Constantius made a relative of Claudius II, the winner is ready. In general, despite indications that he will write only the truth, the biographies compiled by him do not, according to modern scholars, have great historical value and are distinguished by pomp and rhetoric.

Mostly Trebellius worked on the biography of Claudius II, representing a continuous panegyric to this emperor; for his exaltation, he cited, as elsewhere in his work, various kinds of false information.

The text of Trebellius was published together with other writers of The History of Augustus. In the XIX century, the text was edited by Peter (Leipzig, 1884).
