Biography
He graduated from high school in Aachen , at the age of 16 he entered the University of Bonn to study classical philology and became interested in archeology there. In his youth, having completed his studies, he took several scientific trips to Italy and Sicily, having settled for some time in Rome. Living in this city, he helped Edward Gerhard to collect materials for his multi-volume work about Rome, and also wrote several works on the topography of this city, which later appeared in a revised form in his Codex urhis Romae topographicus (1871). In 1840 he returned from Rome to Bonn , in 1841 he was rehabilitated. Since 1843, as an experienced archaeologist, Augustus was accepted by William Wilhelm Schleleg as a scientific associate of the Art Museum, later becoming its co-director. At the same time he taught at the University of Bonn, in 1844 received the title of extraordinary professor, and in 1847 he transferred to the University of Greifswald, where he immediately became an ordinary professor of classical philology. From 1848 to 1852 he was a member of the Prussian Chamber of Deputies, and was also a member of the so-called Erfurt Parliament. He planned to continue his political career, but in 1855 he accepted an invitation to head the department of classical philology and aesthetics at the University of Würzburg; In parallel, he was an inspector of Bavarian gymnasiums, participated in the development of the Bavarian school code, conducted extensive research in the field of archeology, and also oversaw university collections of ancient artifacts: in particular, thanks to his efforts, the University of Wurzburg museum became the owner of the third largest collection of antique vases in Germany. In 1857 he was appointed adviser to the Bavarian government, since 1866 he was a member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences. He had several state awards, including in 1880 he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order for his services to the Bavarian crown.
Major works: Die Anfänge der griechischen Künstlergeschichte (1871–1872), Bemerkungen über den Olympischen Tempel und seine Bildwerke (1877), Verzeichniss der Antikensammlungen der Universität Würzburg; "Chrestomatia Pliniana" (1857). On the initiative of Urlichs, a society was established for the study of pagan and Christian antiquities in the Rhine basin, which has its own body called Jahrbücher des Vereins von Alterthumsfreunden im Rheinlande (since 1842). A brief but informative essay compiled by Urlichs on the history of classical philology (Grundlegung und Geschichte der klassischen Altertumswissenschaft, 1886) was included in the encyclopedia of classical antiquity by Müller (Handbuch der klassischen Altertumswissenschaft). In the last years of his life, he wrote a number of biographical articles about philologists for the publication "Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie".
