Bug-Jargal ( fr. Bug-Jargal ) - the first novel by Victor Hugo , written by him two years before , in 1818. According to the author's preface of 1826, “the initial sketch of this short essay was printed and distributed in a limited number of copies as early as 1820, ” but five years later the novel was significantly revised, and a year later it was published again. The events of the work develop against the background of the Negro uprising of 1791 in the French colony of San Domingo . The novel was created on the basis of existing documents, eyewitness stories, newspaper articles, in “Byug-Zhargal”, in addition to fictional characters, there are a number of real people - the leader of the Negro army , the leaders of the mulatto Auger , and others [1] .
