The Constitution of Jamaica is the fundamental law of the State of Jamaica [1] .
History
Jamaica, a former province of the West Indies Federation , gained independence from Britain on August 6, 1962, in accordance with the Jamaican Independence Act of 1962 . Under the 1962 West Indies Act , the British monarchy permitted the formation of governments in the former colonies of the West Indies Federation. Elizabeth II , in consultation with the Privy Council , issued an Order in Jamaica , which formally gave the Constitution full legal rights and power.
