Biography

Youth

Brian Epstein was born in Liverpool on September 19, 1934 into a prosperous Jewish family. The foundations of the well-being of the Epstein family were laid by the grandfather of Brian Isaac Epstein, who opened the Epstein and Sons furniture store.

As a child, Brian did not like to learn, did not like sports and struggled to make acquaintances. At ten, he was expelled from school several times. At thirteen, Epstein did not pass the entrance exams required to enter a private school. Parents enrolled him in a school in West Country, where they took all comers.

In the fall of 1948, at the insistence of his father, Brian changed his place of study. The father has achieved transfer of the son in private college Rekin. For the boy, this was a big problem: he was just accustomed to a new school, where he showed success in painting and made friends. Gradually, Brian adapted to the new school. He painted better than anyone in the classroom, he wanted to become a fashion designer, but his father did not consider this profession a worthy man. Brian left school before he was sixteen, without a certificate.

After school, Epstein worked in a family-owned furniture store. December 9, Brian was drafted into the army . If he did not like school, he hated the army. He constantly broke the chain of command and was not able to perform the simplest order. Ten months after the call, the medical commission concluded that Brian was not fit for military service. The army greatly undermined his mental health.

Returning home, Epstein worked in his father's shop, he was fond of theater. Exhorted by friends, Brian decided to enter the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art . Enrolling without much difficulty, Brian studied for three semesters before leaving this bohemian place. He did not like the atmosphere that prevailed in the academy.

Wanting to become famous, Brian persuaded his father to open a record store, and soon after that, and the second, thanks to Brian's enthusiasm, both stores flourished. Epstein was obsessed with the idea that any record could be found in his shop, and he was very proud of his collection in which the most scarce records could be found.

Brian and The Beatles

When in one of the Epstein stores several people asked for the record The Beatles, Brian was quite surprised because he had not heard anything about them [1] . November 9, 1961, Brian Epstein visited a concert in the club " Cavern ", where he first heard the band The Beatles . In his autobiography, Brian will write:

Then the Beatles came out, and for the first time I saw them with my own eyes. Very untidy and not very clean. Performing songs, the guys smoked, ate, talked and jokingly exchanged cuffs. They turned their backs on the public, quarreled with club visitors and laughed at their own jokes. But they, quite obviously, caused colossal arousal. Some kind of magnetism seemed to come from them. I was conquered.

Brian didn’t have much to do with the role of the “The Beatles” manager . He had no experience in the music business at all. In addition, he was not at all like the guys from the group. However, after several meetings, the guys agreed. Becoming the manager of The Beatles, Brian began to deal with the most important urgent task - he created a stage image , taught them to discipline, worked on their appearance, and taught them to serve their music.

By actively using his reputation as the owner of the "best record player in the north of England," Brian was able to agree on recording the first album, "The Beatles" at EMI . Thanks to Epstein, the world saw the "legendary Liverpool four."

Last years of life

The company showed interest in real estate, acquired the Sibyll theater and continued to expand its activities in the field of management.

In the last two years of his life, due to constant difficulties at work, Brian became addicted to sleeping pills.
