Events Prior to the Shooting
On April 25, 1944, at the invitation of the command of the German garrison of the town of Arachov in Central Greece, a group of 17 German officers (including 2 colonels, 1 major, 5 captains and several lieutenants and non-commissioned officers) went from the neighboring city of Levadia to Arachova, to celebrate the patron saint of the town. On the way, the group was ambushed by the partisans of the People's Liberation Army of Greece (ELAS). During the battle, 2 German lieutenants were killed. The remaining officers were captured [1] [3] .
Execution
The ELAS command, in a letter to the commandant’s office of Levadia, demanded the exchange of officers for 32 civilians accused of participating in the Resistance and imprisoned 4 days earlier. Not responding to the letter, the German command of Levadia hastily executed 136 (according to other sources 134 [4] ) prisoners from the prisons of Levadia and Lamia . The shooting was carried out at the battlefield in Caracolito. Among those shot, in addition to prisoners, there were 5 residents of the nearby village of Distomo [1] [5] .
Memory
After the war, a monument to the work of the Greek sculptor Angelika Corovesi was erected at the scene of the battle and execution in Karakolito [6] .
