History
It was one of the last large Cuban cities founded by the Spaniards - it received city status only in 1867. Since many Filipinos arrived here in Manila galleons through Mexico , these places were originally known as Nueva Philippines. After Mexico gained independence, trade with the help of Manila galleons ceased, and in these places in Cuba they began to grow the same varieties of tobacco that had previously been exported from the Philippines. The city that emerged in the center of the tobacco region became the center of the cigar industry.
