Biography
He was the son of the Spanish Colonel Ildefonso Hernandez and the Cuban Emelina Kata. Shortly after his birth with his parents, he moved to Cuba, settled in the family in the city of Santiago de Cuba. At sixteen, he entered a military college in Toledo, but without a vocation for a military career, he left school and moved to Madrid, where he became a carpenter's apprentice and entered the bohemian metropolitan society. Learned languages and worked as a translator. Later entered the diplomatic service. Also studied psychology and history. In 1907 he published his first book, "Passionate Tales", which had reader success. He married Mercedes Galt and returned to Havana, where he got a job as a journalist for Diario de la Marina and La Discussion and collaborated with Graphico, El Figaro and Sosal.
In 1909 he entered the diplomatic service and was a second-class consul, first in Le Havre, in 1911 in Birmingham, in 1913 in Santander, in 1914 in Cadiz and Alicante. In 1918 he was appointed first class consul and arrived in Madrid, where he participated in the literary life of the city. In 1921, due to the protection of the right to self-determination, the colonies of Spain in Morocco were expelled and returned to Le Havre. At that time, he served as Charge d'Affaires of the Republic of Cuba in Lisbon, but returned to Madrid in 1925 in the status of consul, and in 1933 he was appointed Ambassador of Cuba to Spain. From 1935 to 1938, he served as Cuban ambassador to Panama, Chile and Brazil, where he died in a plane crash flying over Botafogo Bay in Rio de Janeiro, on November 8, 1940. In memory of the writer, Chilean poet Gabriela Mistral and Austrian writer Stefan Zweig left epitaphs.
He wrote many tragedies and comedies in collaboration with playwrights and , Alejandro Cazona . His prose works are erotic in nature.
After the writer's death, according to his will, a literary prize was established for his money, which was given to writers who worked in the genre of a short story.
