At the beginning of the 20th century, the most popular sports in Yuzovka were: cycling, weightlifting, gymnastics, wrestling, tennis and football. There were various sports societies on an irregular basis. In October 1911, the vice-governor of the Yekaterinoslav province chamber junk Tatishchev granted the request for the opening of the Yuzovsky Sports Society - this was the first regular sports society. The society developed various sports, but football was the main one.
In 1915, the sports society of the Novorossiysk company totaled 200 members. In April 1919, the Donetsk Provincial Military Commissariat introduced physical education classes in public schools and adopted the regulations on working sports clubs. On April 30, 1923, the first sports festival was held in Yuzovka, in which all sports clubs of the Donbass took part.
In 1937, Stalin was awarded first place in the USSR for his achievements in the development of physical education and sports among workers.

Women's football is represented by the Donetsk team . There is also an Olympic Women's Soccer Training Center [2] .
Shakhtar and Olimpiysky stadiums hosted UEFA Champions League matches 2004/2005 and 2006/2007 . In Donetsk, the matches of the European Youth Football Championship Euro-2009 (U-19) were held , as well as the matches [3] of Euro-2012 (group stage matches, quarter-finals and semifinals) [4] .

In Donetsk, the international athletics tournament " Zepter - Pole Stars " is held. Pole vaulters Sergey Bubka and Elena Isinbaeva were awarded the title of “ Honorary Citizen of Donetsk ”. A monument has been erected to Sergey Bubka .
In 1980, the Donetsk athletes Nadezhda Tkachenko and Nina Zyukova won gold medals at the XXII Summer Olympics , Vasily Arkhipenko won the silver medal, and Valery Podluzhny won the bronze.
From July 10 to July 14, 2013, the 8th World Athletics Championship among youths was held at RSK Olimpiysky . But, unfortunately, the Ukrainian team was able to win only one medal there: athlete Valery Semenkova took the “bronze” in the hammer throw (3 kg); two more took fourth places: Alexander Barannikov in high jumps and Alexander Maloselov in a triple jump.
Hockey and floorball
In 1975, the Friendship Sports Palace was commissioned. Refrigeration units were installed in it and a children's hockey section was opened. In Druzhba Sports Palace, matches were held among the youth teams of the Soviet Union, in 1975 - an international youth hockey tournament among the teams of socialist countries, in 1983 - an international tournament for the prizes of the newspaper "Soviet Sport" with the participation of clubs of the highest and first leagues of the USSR (" Falcon ”Kiev,“ Salavat Yulaev ”Ufa,“ Torpedo ”Gorky,“ Crystal ”Saratov, SK Uritsky Kazan), Finland (Ilves) and the national team of Romania. In 1990, a professional hockey team “Cooperator” was created in Donetsk, which played in the championship of the Soviet Union, and also won a bronze medal at the Winter Sports and Games of Ukraine. In May 1991, the ice field of the DS "Druzhba" failed. Due to economic difficulties, the equipment was never repaired. Hockey players from Donetsk moved to other clubs. In 2003 [13] , 2004 [14] and 2008 [15] , Donetsk hosted the Open Cup of Ukraine on floorball “ Winged Ball ”. The Mayak billiard club has 15 full-sized tables for Russian billiards and 2 pool tables. The Mirage billiard club has 5 full-sized tables for Russian billiards and 1 pool table. In the tandem billiard club, in addition to full-sized tables, there are three-quarter tables. The MAXI billiard club has 14 full-sized tables for Russian billiards. Club MAXI is one of the base clubs of the Donetsk Regional Billiard Federation, it hosts the largest number of official tournaments. In 1915, the Falcons gymnastic team numbered 80 people.
In 1936, Donetsk gymnast Leonid Yaryza became the first in the Donbass and the sixth master of sports of the USSR in the country.
Polina Astakhova graduated from the Donetsk College of Physical Education and in Donetsk began her sports glory. In 1960, Polina Astakhova became the champion of the XVII Summer Olympic Games in artistic gymnastics.
Olympic champion in gymnastics Liliya Podkopaeva lives in Donetsk, under her leadership in the city hosts the international festival " Golden Lilia " [29] . In 1997, Lilia Podkopaeva was recognized as the “Athlete of the Year”.
Boxing

Weightlifting
Donetsk weightlifter Stanislav Batishchev and Donetsk weightlifters Yuri Yablonovsky and Alexander Galkin set world records.
In 1980, the Donetsk weightlifter Alexander Perviy won the silver medal at the XXII Summer Olympics .
Vladimir Turchinsky organized in Donetsk the competition “The Strongest Man of Ukraine”.
Basketball
Donetsk men's basketball team "Donbasskanalstroy" became the winner of the 4th Spartakiad of the Ukrainian SSR .
The Shakhtar Basketball Club was the bronze medalist of Ukraine in 1995 and the silver medalist of Ukraine in 1996 [30] .
The team “Donetsk” plays in the major league. In the first league two female teams “ Tektonik - SDYUSHOR ” [31] , “ Donchanka - University ” [32] [33] play. Eight teams play in the youth league [34] .
Women's basketball team Energobis participated in the Lilian Ronchetti Cup [35] .
Freestyle Wrestling
In 1980, the Donetsk wrestler Ilya Mate won the gold medal at the XXII Summer Olympics .
Cycling
On April 14 and 15, 2007, the Donetsk Grand Prix cycling competition [36] was organized by the ISD sports club . The competition included two national level cycling races: a criterion race in the program of the Ukrainian Cycling Championship and a group road cycling race.
Motorsport
In 2005, the Donbass-Kart cartodrome began to function. The complex includes a go-kart track with a length of about 800 meters with posts for marshals and timing, equipped boxes, platforms for teams with electricity supplied. This track is one of the best in Ukraine, along with the Poltava Ltava and the kartodrome of the Kiev sports complex Chaika. Auto Model

In 1971, 1976, Donetsk hosted the Ukrainian SSR Championships in chess among men . In 1993, Donetsk hosted the Ukrainian Men's Chess Championship.
Donchanin Yuriy Isakovich Kots twice became the champion of Ukraine in chess (in 1961 and 1971). Donchanin Yevhen Miroshnichenko became the champion of Ukraine in chess in 2003. In 2006, Yevgeny Miroshnichenko became the winner of the Inavtomarket Open international chess tournament. Donchanka Ekaterina Lagno twice became the European chess champion (in 2005 and 2008).

Mountaineering
Donetsk Regional Mountaineering Federation [44] is a sports society that promotes mountaineering and climbing in the Donetsk region .
At the Ukrainian Mountaineering Championship, the team of the Federation of Mountaineering and Climbing of the Donetsk Region took first places in the rock class in 1995, 1996, 2008; in the high class in 2006, 2007, 2008; in the winter climbing class in 2004, in the technical climbing class in 1994, 1995, 2003.
The chairman of the federation is the master of sports of international class Sergey Viktorovich Kovalev [45] . The federation has about 1,500 people, both professional climbers and amateurs [46] .
As part of the Donbass project on the highest points of planet Earth, Federation climbers raise a small copy of Mertsalov ’s palm to the top of the mountains, and then pass it to the embassy of the countries on whose territory they climbed [47] . In 2001-2004, as part of this project, climbers climbed the 7 highest peaks of the world - Elbrus , Aconcagua , Mackinley , Kilimanjaro , Everest , Mount Wilhelm , Mount Vinson [48] . Climbers raised by climbers are half a meter long and weigh three kilograms [49] . A series of television programs “Ukrainian Hero” was released on this project on Inter TV channel.
In 2009, athletes of the federation, as part of the program “Coal of the Donbass - on the peaks of the world”, climbed one of the nameless peaks of the Tien Shan mountain system and, as first-timers, assigned it the name “ Peak of Miners of Ukraine ” [50] .
In 2010, athletes plan to carry out an expedition to Antarctica. The purpose of the expedition is to make the first ascent to one of the unnamed peaks of Massive Vinson and call it “Donbass Peak”.
The Federation organizes mountaineering competitions in memory of M. M. Turkevich , which take place at the climbing wall in Zuevka [51] .
