Biography
Manuel Leonel Pereira-Quintero was born in Havana on October 31, 1948. He studied at the Academy of San Alejandro. During his studies, he was awarded the National University Award in the chronicle, reportage and interview categories three times in a row. From 1968 to 1978, he worked as a journalist with a number of local and foreign publications, such as Cuba Internacional, El Cayman Barbudo, Boehmea, Revolucion and Culture, and Casa de Las Americas.
In 1978 he graduated from the Faculty of Journalism of the University of Havana . He has written articles for several Spanish and Mexican publications, such as El País, El Mundo, Chimera and El Universal. The writer's work was greatly influenced by the events of the Cuban revolution. His first novel, Kamandante Venevo ( Spanish El Comandante Veneno ) (completed in 1974, published in 1977), spoke about the fight against illiteracy in the Sierra Maestra mountains. After reading this book, Gabriel García Márquez said: "This is the novel I would like to write about Cuba."
In 1980, the second novel by the Russian writer was published ( Spanish El Ruso ). In the early 1980s, he collaborated as a screenwriter with ICAIC (Cuban Film and Production Institute). At the same time, he worked as editor-in-chief, then as deputy director in the Cuban Cinema magazine. In 1982 he wrote the screenplay for the film “Old Havana” directed by Oscar Valdez , who won a prize at the Venice Film Festival .
In 1984 - 1988 he served as cultural attache at UNESCO in Paris . During these years he was engaged in teaching. In European and Asian universities he lectured on literature, art, cinema and culture. In 1988 he published a book of essays "The Fifth Ship of Fools" ( Spanish. La quinta nave de los locos ). In 1988, he returned to Havana, where he was subjected to harsh criticism from the official authorities. In January 1991, unable to withstand the pressure, he left for Berlin , to Germany.
In 1993, he was hired as a senior editor at the literary magazine Kimera in Barcelona, Spain. In the same year, his novel Toilet was published ( Spanish. Toilette ). At that time, he collaborated with various publishing houses as a translator from English and French and a freelance journalist. Led literary courses in Barcelona and Cadiz . In the framework of the project for the rehabilitation of prisoners in April - July 1996, he held a creative workshop in a correctional institution on the island of Mallorca.
