Gameplay
The game is a two-dimensional platformer. The player controls a character named Ori (a fabulous white creature, somewhere between a fox, a squirrel and a wild cat) and a spirit protecting him named Sein ( Eng. Sein ) - a bundle of energy that follows Ori. With the help of Sein, you can attack enemies, in which he (by pressing the left mouse button, pressing the “X” key on the keyboard or the gamepad button) launches charges of “spiritual flame”. In addition, Sein can make a short-term powerful release of energy (for which the resource is spent), hitting all enemies near Ori, and destroying some objects. Ori himself initially can only jump, but during the game he will be able to learn to climb walls, dive under water, float in the air, make double-triple jumps and use energy to shoot himself or push away enemies and objects.
The game map representing different parts of the forest is loaded entirely, and the player is free to go where he wants, however, without opening up the hero’s ability defined for this area, the player will not be able to get there anyway.
Initially, the player is thrown into the game world without any explanations about what needs to be done, and through trial and error it is necessary to search for a solution yourself. After the player finds Sein, he will already receive some clues from him.
The game mechanics of Ori and the Blind Forest are well developed, the creators of the game have improved it for a year and a half [2] . Ori has an indicator of health and an indicator of energy, presented in the form of cells. Initially, Ori is very weak, so it has only three health cells and one energy cell. During the exploration of the world, the player will find additional cells for these indicators. By killing enemies and finding skill points, Ori's abilities can be improved.
There are a total of three areas of character development that are allowed to pump simultaneously. One of them is responsible for combat skills, the second is responsible for improving the search for caches, and the third is responsible for auxiliary abilities (breathing underwater, reducing resource costs when performing any actions, etc.).
The player can be saved at any time of the game, which is also part of the gameplay, since in the game the control points are located very far from each other on the map, and after the death of the game you will have to start from the last saved point. An energy cell is spent on saving the game, so the player at the beginning of the game has to save selectively. Toward the end of the game, when the cells are usually larger, saving the game is no longer a big problem.
Story
The game takes place in the magical forest Nibel, in the center of which grows a giant tree of spirits. Once during a storm, a leaf comes off the tree, which after falling to the ground turns into a small white animal - Ori. He is found by Naru - the inhabitant of the forest, resembling a bear in appearance - and takes it with him.
Ori takes Naru for his mother, not knowing about her true nature, and together they spend time gathering fruit from the trees until one day there is a cataclysm, after which the Tree of Spirits stops giving the forest a life-giving energy. Plants cease to blossom and produce fruits, water bodies become polluted, and the forest grows with impenetrable spines. Stocks of fruit soon run out, and Naru dies. Ori decides to leave their home and goes to the center of the forest, where after a while the exhausted falls near the tree of spirits. At one point, the tree gives up the rest of Ori's energy in the hope that a little spirit protector can restore the forest.
Characters
- Ori - the main character of the game, forest spirit.
- Kuro - a giant owl, the main antagonist of the game. Protecting his last chick, Kuro becomes the cause of the cataclysm.
- Naru - foster mother Ori.
- Gumo is the last Humon of Ruin Forlorn.
- Sein - the heart of the tree of spirits, Ori assistant.
- The Kuro chick is the last baby of the Kuro owl.
Development
Ori and the Blind Forest was developed for 4 years by Moon Studios [3] [4] . One of the leading developers - Thomas Mahler ( born Thomas Mahler ) - in the past worked at Blizzard Entertainment [5] . According to Microsoft producer Daniel Smith, Moon Studios is not concentrated in any one place: developers are located in different parts of the world, such as Austria , Australia , Israel , the United States and other countries [6] . Programmer David Clarke said that Ori and the Blind Forest is a tribute to classic adventure games like Rayman and Metroid .
When writing the plot, the developers were guided by such works as “ The Lion King ” and “The Steel Giant ” [7] : in particular, the scene in which Naru dies and Ori mourns her, at key points copies the scene of Mufasa's death, and Kuro's self-sacrifice repeats the final scene in "Steel giant". The game itself is written on the Unity game engine. The game takes place on a single large map without visible loading of parts of the game world, so you need to wait for a long enough load before the game. According to the developers, not a single drawn background element is duplicated.
For the first time, the game was presented at E3 2014 at a presentation at the Galen Center; By the way, E3 was the event where all developers first met each other for the first time. During E3, its visitors lined up to try out the demo version.
After E3 Moon Studios announced the release of the Xbox-version of the game in early 2015 [8] . In November 2014, Moon Studios announced plans to postpone the release for all planned platforms, without mentioning, however, anything about the Xbox 360 platform [9] . Later they said that the game for this platform would be released soon.

Reviews
Ori and the Blind Forest received critical acclaim, especially visual style, game history, music, world exploration and game design.
|
At the annual voting of The Game Awards 2015, the game won first place in the category “Best art direction” [31] , as well as second place in the category “Best platformer”, just 1% behind the winner of Super Mario Maker - the designer of cards for Mario [32] .
Sales
According to one of the leading developer of Moon Studios, Thomas Mahler, he officially declared that their first big project, Ori and the Blind Forest, had already managed to completely beat off their production costs and this happened within just a week after the release, and hinted that franchise can see the next part .
“ We and Microsoft do not hide our happiness: Ori and the Blind Forest managed to completely discourage the budget invested in it just a week after the release. I would not even be surprised if in the future any film studio would not decide to acquire the rights to the screen version of our game, because it no doubt looked great on the big screen. And yes, I will not deny that our team really wants to make a new big project, and is already working on five different prototypes that may eventually become full-fledged games. I would like to tell you a little more, but, unfortunately, for certain reasons I cannot disclose all the details regarding our future plans . ”
At the time of December 2015 on the Steam platform , the game sold in more than 420 thousand copies. [33]
