Function
IRF5 is a member of the family of interferon regulatory factors (MAF), a group of transcription factors with various roles, including virus-mediated activation of interferon and modulation of cell growth, their differentiation, apoptosis and immune system activity. Members of the IRF family are characterized by a conservative containing repeating tryptophan (W). There are alternative splicing variants encoding different isoforms. [one]
Clinical value
IRF5 acts as a molecular switch that controls macrophages , whether they promote or inhibit inflammation. Blocking the production of IRF5 in macrophages can help treat a wide range of autoimmune diseases, and increasing the level of IRF5 can help treat people whose immune systems are weak, ineffective or damaged. IRF5 seems to work "either by interacting with DNA directly, or by interacting with other proteins that control themselves, which genes to switch." [2]
