Biography

In 1941 she graduated from Vilis Olavs Commercial School in Riga. In the same year, she was evacuated in Russia, underwent accelerated training as a nurse, and began working in a military hospital in Yaroslavl . In 1942 she began studying at the First Moscow Medical Institute, after the end of the Second World War she transferred to the Medical Faculty of the Latvian State University , which she graduated in 1948. Simultaneously, in 1946, she began working at the Institute of Microbiology of the Academy of Sciences of the Latvian SSR under the direction of A. M. Kirhenshteyn - first as a senior laboratory assistant, then, after defending a diploma, as scientific secretary. In 1954 she defended her thesis candidate of medical sciences. In 1959, she became a senior researcher.

In the 1960s, he became interested in ancient developments in the treatment of cancer by infecting a patient with a virus that destroys cancer cells. In 1965, she founded and headed the virotherapy laboratory for cancer, which she headed until 1989, at the Institute of Microbiology. At the same time she worked as a scientific consultant at the Stradins Clinical Hospital (up to 2003). In 1974 she received the degree of doctor of medical sciences.

The scientific achievement of Muceniece is the detection of intestinal viruses obtained from the intestines of young children, who are not only able to destroy a tumor, but also do not cause significant harm to the human body. In the laboratory of Mutseniece 60 different intestinal viruses were tested, one of them, with the most pronounced abilities to destroy cancer cells, was named RIGVIR . [one]
