It is part of the Oder-Spree region . The population is 11,644 people (as of 2009). It covers an area of 16.60 km². The official code is 12 0 67 124 .

History
First mentioned in 1579 . In 1712 , a station was opened in the city on the postal line Berlin - Frankfurt an der Oder , in 1842 - a railway station. In 1909 , the world's first industrial production of plastics ( bakelite ) was launched. In 1910 , the Catholic parish of St. Boniface appeared. In 1928, a station was built on the railway line from Berlin to Frankfurt an der Oder.
In 1938-45, a branch of the SKF ball-bearing factory worked in the city. During the bombing on March 8, 1944, 1,007 of 1,033 houses were destroyed, and about 230 people were killed. Soviet troops occupied the city on April 21, 1945 .
The city council consists of 22 members, 11 of which, according to the results of the 2008 elections , belong to the SPD, 7 to the Left .
Economics
The main industry is the chemical industry. Among academic institutions is the International Institute for Regional Development and Structural Planning (IRS).
Attractions
The city houses the Gerhart Hauptmann Museum - the museum of the Nobel Prize winner in literature Gerhart Hauptmann , who lived in it in 1885-89. Among the city’s memorials are a monument to the victims of World War I and a monument opened in 1994 to the victims of fascism , war and tyranny.
There are three churches in Erkner: the Evangelical Geneseratkirche (1896, Neo-Gothic ), the Catholic Church of St. Boniface (1932) and the New Apostolic Church (mid-1990s).
