Biography
Born in 1887 in Posen . He entered the university in Breslau, subsequently studied in Berlin and Göttingen. In 1910, under the leadership of David Hilbert, he defended a thesis on the modular functions of two variables. Since 1915 he became a professor in Basel, then taught in Gottingen and Hamburg. He spent the rest of his life in Copenhagen.
