History
In 1239, Herzberg was first documented as a city. And the oldest archaeological finds in this place date back to 1215. For a long time, historians relied on a document in which it was said that the city was founded in 1184, but later it turned out that the document was not real and the city of Herzberg played an important role in the region much later.
The name of the city of Herzberg comes from the word Hirschen (German: Hirschen - deer). Since its inception, the city was called Hirschberg (German: Hirschberg), later Hirthsbergh and Hirzberg, and only then the name is used to this day.
In 1361, the city of Herzberg received the privilege of holding salt markets. The medieval trade route from Leipzig through Torgau and to Frankfurt an der Oder also passed through Herzberg.
Already in 1522, the first Protestant service in German was held here, which was held by Johannes Wagner. Philip Melanchthon already in 1538 drew up a school code for the local gymnasium, which was later adopted throughout Germany.
Herzberg is one of the few cities in Germany that was not conquered during the Thirty Years War due to the extensive river and ditch system.
In 1757, a city fire destroyed most of the city. By a decision of the Vienna Congress of 1815, the city passed the province of Saxony .
