History

The theater was founded by A. A. Bryantsev and opened on February 23, 1922 with the performance The Little Humpbacked Horse . For many years this performance was a kind of hallmark of the theater, and the Little Humpbacked Horse was its emblem.

From 1922 to 1962, the theater occupied the premises of the former Tenishevsky School on Mokhovaya Street in Leningrad (now the educational theater “On Mokhovaya” is located in the building).

During the war years, from 1942 to 1944, the troupe of the theater was evacuated to the Urals . Actors performed on the stage of the Bereznikovsky Drama Theater .

In 1962, the theater moved to a modern building specially designed for it (architect A.V. Zhuk ) on the square, which was named Pionerskaya in the same year. In the architectural project of A. V. Zhuk, which reflected the development of A. A. Bryantsev , everything was adapted to the theatrical and pedagogical traditions of the Leningrad Youth Theater. The building of the "old Youth Theater" (as Leningraders called it) was provided to the Teaching Theater .

The address of the theater is St. Petersburg , Pioneer Square , 1.

In 1962-1986, the theater was headed by Z. Y. Korogodsky .

In 1996, Anatoly Praudin became the artistic director of the theater. In June 1998, he was removed from this post [2] .

In 2002, the Youth Theater named after A. A. Bryantsev was headed by Grigory Kozlov . On the eve of the start of the 2007/2008 season, Grigory Mikhailovich filed a resignation, deciding to focus on working with students in his workshop at the Theater Academy [3] .

Chairman of the Committee on Culture Nikolai Burov publicly made a sharp negative statement in relation to the work of Grigory Kozlov.

In 2007, A. Ya. Shapiro was appointed head of art projects. At the same time, Arseny Sagalchik was confirmed to be the chief director, by whom he remained until his death in 2015.

Over the years, a number of performances were staged by the director Georgy Vasiliev (1946-2014) at the scenic venues of the Youth Theater named after A. A. Bryantsev, which, after years, remain in the theater’s repertoire [4] .
