Biography

Jaap de Hoop Scheffer was born on April 3, 1948 in Amsterdam . In 1967 he graduated from the Catholic classical gymnasium named after St. Ignatius of Loyola . In 1974 he graduated from the Law Faculty of Leiden University and received a master 's degree in law .

After graduation, he was drafted into the army, served as a pilot of a military transport aircraft in the Royal Netherlands Air Force .

In 1975, he became an intern in the information department of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1976 , after completing a one-year training course for young diplomats, she was appointed for two years at the Dutch Embassy in Ghana . From 1978 to 1980 he worked in Brussels at the Dutch mission to NATO. In 1980-1986 , he was the personal secretary of the Dutch Foreign Minister .

From 1986 to 2002 he was a member of the Dutch parliament from the Christian Democratic Appeal . Twice, in 1992 - 1997 and 2001 - 2002, he headed the parliamentary commission on international affairs. In 1995-1997 , he served as deputy leader of the Christian Democratic Party, and from 1997 to 2001 he was the leader of the party.

From 2002 to 2003 - Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, concurrently in 2003 was chairman of the OSCE .

In 2004, he assumed the post of NATO Secretary General . On December 10, 2006, it was decided to extend the mandate of de Hoop Scheffer until 2009 . In 2009, he handed over the post to Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen .

Under de Hoop Scheffer, the number of NATO members grew from 19 to 28 countries, and in 2006 the intention of the alliance to eventually accept Georgia and Ukraine into its ranks became known. While de Hoop Scheffer was NATO Secretary General, the alliance actively participated in peacekeeping operations in Afghanistan and Kosovo .

De Hoop Scheffer is married, has two daughters. Fluent in English , French and German , plays tennis and squash , runs .
