Khovd ( in the pre-Soviet period - Kobdo [1] , in the Soviet period - Jirgalant [2] ) ( Mong. Khovd ) - a city in the western part of Mongolia , the administrative center of the aimag of the same name . Khovd is located on the Khovd River (Kobdo-Gol) , not far from Lake Har-Us-Nuur . History
The city was founded in the XVII century by Galdan-Boshogtu- khan, the ruler of Dzungaria (1671-1697). The Qing Empire established control over Khovd after the death of the Dzungar Khanate in 1757. The reign of the Qing empire ended after the capture of the Manchurian-Chinese garrison by the formations of the Mongolian people's army on August 7, 1912, led by Manlai Baatur Damdinsuren, Hatan -Bator Maksarzhava and Ja-lama Dambidzhaltsan.
Physico-geographical characteristics
Khovd is located at the foot of the Mongolian Altai . Har-Us-Nuur Lake , which is part of the Manhan Nature Reserve, is located 25 km from the city.
Hovda's climate is desert ( Köppen's climate classification is BWk), with dry, almost snowless and long winters and short and hot summers. The amount of precipitation is insignificant; most of them fall in the summer.

Population
The population (2000 census) - 26,023 people, 2003 - 30,479 (estimate), 2007 - 28,601 (estimate [3] ).
In 2005, 32,351 people (6,675 families) lived in the Jargalant somon, belonging to more than 10 different ethnic groups and nationalities - Olet , Khalkhi , Zakhchin , Torgut , Uryanhayts , Myangad , Derbet , Bayat , Kazakhs , Chantu ( Uzbeks ) and Uzumchins [4] .
