Expanding the boundaries of the city
In the last decade, the population of the city is constantly growing. In this regard, the territory of the city is constantly increasing. Two main directions of expanding borders can be distinguished:
- Western
New Ibbenbüren motorway junction in the urban area of Schierloh. The development of new industrial and service companies will be carried out west of the city. New housing is also being built in the direction of Pusselbüren .
- East / Southeast
Due to the expansion in the central part of the city in the east and the simultaneous expansion of the Laggenbeck zone to the west, due to the construction of new buildings, the districts are slowly approaching each other. Although the official distance between the center and the Laggenbeck line on the roads is five kilometers, in reality it is already about two kilometers.
Officially, in accordance with § 4, paragraph 2 of the municipal law, Ibbenbüren is a medium-sized county town. Following the reform of the municipal code in 2007, the city is allowed to apply for the status of a great city. In this case, the city will have significantly more opportunities and powers.
History
Title
It is not known exactly when the name of the city appeared and what it means. There are assumptions that come from the two components of the word - Ibben- and -buren .
The word -buren comes from the Old Germanic language and has the meaning of a hut , rural yard or farm . The first word, Ibben , is much more difficult to explain. There are many versions; according to the most plausible, in ancient times among the Germanic peoples the name Ibbo or Ibbu was very common. People bearing this name were considered noble and courageous. Based on this, the name Ibbenbüren can be translated into modern language as “Ibba's Settlement” or “Ibba's Farm” . At present, the name Ibbo is not used.
First mention
The city of Ibbenbüren was first mentioned in a letter of honor on April 14, 1146 , when Philip fon Katzenelnbogen ( German Philipp von Katzenelnbogen ), bishop of Osnabrueck , blessed Osnabruck Monastery of St. Gertrude ( German Getrudenkloster ) as part of the church taxation of the faithful. Although another church document of 1348 testifies to the founding of a local church in 799, the year 1146 is still considered the official foundation date of the city of Ibbenbüren.
