History
The river Issel from Roman times was the natural border of the territory of Hamminkeln. The Romans built here additional boundary shafts, which are now identified with the Klever Landwehr . At the time of the great migration of peoples (around 350), the Issel River served as the border between Christian Franks in the west and Saxons in the east. The border of the Christianization of German tribes passed along the river. Only in 779 did Charles the Great cross this religious border with his troops, who invaded the territory of Saxony. It is considered. that this event occurred in the area between modern Dingden and Loykum. According to the Verdun Treaty of 843, the Issel River again became the border of new state formations: the eastern part was transferred to the East Frankish kingdom of Louis II of Germany , and the western part became part of the Middle Kingdom of Lothar I. For the first time, Hamminkel was documented in 946 as the Hamwinkile.)
