The death of the liner, torpedoed on January 30, 1945 by the Soviet submarine S-13 , headed by Captain Marinesko , is considered one of the largest disasters in maritime history: from 5 to 9 thousand people died in it, according to various estimates.
Story
Shortly after the outbreak of war, radio announcer Maria married her colleague Kurt Reiser. While her husband is at the front, Maria lives with his parents. At a New Year's party, she met naval officer Hans Schott and became pregnant from him.
Maria went to her friend Edith at an estate in East Prussia, where she lived with her child. Edith is killed by the Red Army, Kurt comes to the aid of his wife and her child. Mary and her child arrive with thousands of other refugees in Gotenhafen, where the crowded ship-hospital "Wilhelm Gustloff" stands. Maria again meets her already seriously wounded husband.
With the help of Schott, who served on the liner, Mary managed to get on board. The very first night at sea, the ship was sunk by a Soviet submarine. Among the few survivors were the child of Mary and the general.
