Biography

Born February 28, 1940 in Tomsk in the family of a serviceman, in 1945-1948 the family lived in Austria , then in Rostov-on-Don .

In 1962, after graduating from the Rostov Institute of Agricultural Engineering with a degree in electronic engineering, he worked as an engineer in the computer center of the USSR Hydrometeorological Center in Moscow in 1962-1973.

In 1973 he graduated in absentia from the journalism department of Rostov State University with a degree in journalism. In 1973-1977 he worked as a correspondent for Moscow Radio, in 1977-1979 he was a senior research fellow at the Znanie publishing house, and from 1979-1980, he was the head of the editorial board of the International Relations publishing house.

Since 1980, he was the chief editor of the newspaper Argumenty i Fakty (then it was a bulletin for party propagandists), which over time became one of the most significant in the USSR. During perestroika, he came into conflict with the authorities of the country, but thanks to public support, he was not dismissed from the post of chief editor.

In 1990-1993 - People’s Deputy of the Russian Federation.

In 2001, he sold his share of the Argumenty i Fakty publishing house to Promsvyazkapital, after which he was appointed editor-in-chief of the publishing house.

He died at the 65th year of life on December 4, 2004 in Moscow after a long serious illness.
