Anthony Perkins ( Eng. Anthony Perkins ; April 4, 1932 , New York , New York , USA - September 12, 1992 , Los Angeles , California , USA ) - American actor, singer and director. Best known for his role as Norman Bates in Alfred Hitchcock’s film Psycho (1960) and his sequels. Nominee for the Oscar and a two-time nominee for the Tony Award.

Content
Early years
Perkins was born in New York to the family of actor Osgood Perkins and his wife Janet Esselstin (nee Raine). His paternal grandfather was the engraver [4] . He is also a descendant of one of the passengers of the Mayflower , .
Perkins attended , Columbia University and , before moving to Boston in 1942 [5] .
Career
Perkins made his film debut with the role in the movie “ ” (1953), and made a breakthrough after replacing John Kerr in the Broadway production of the play “ ” in 1954 [6] .
Fame Perkins brought the role of son Gary Cooper in the film " Friendly exhortation " (1956), for which he received the Golden Globe Award for Best Acting Debut among Men and an Oscar nomination in the category Best Supporting Actor . His next role was the role of baseball player in the biopic " " (1957), followed by the westerns "The " (1957) with Jack Palance and " Tin Star " (1957) with Henry Fonda .
Under the name of Tony Perkins, he released three musical albums in the pop genre on the labels " Epic " and " RCA Victor " [7] . His single titled "Moon-Light Swim" was a hit in the United States, reaching 24 spots on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1957 [7] .
Personal Life
Perkins was a very shy man, especially among women. [8] According to his posthumous autobiography, Split Image, written by Charles Weinkoff, for almost forty years, Perkins was exclusively in same-sex relationships; he had novels with actors Rock Hudson and Tab Hunter , photographers and , dancer Rudolf Nureyev , composer Stephen Sondheim and choreographer [9] [10] .
His first heterosexual experience occurred at the age of 39 with actress Victoria Principale on the set of the film “The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean ” in 1971 [11] [12] [8] . At a party in New York in 1972, Perkins met photographer Berry Berenson . They were married on August 9, 1973. Their oldest son, Oz Perkins (born February 2, 1974), is an actor, and the youngest, (born February 9, 1976), is a musician.
Death
During the filming of " Psycho 4: Early " (1990), Perkins was diagnosed with HIV . He died at his home in Los Angeles on September 12, 1992, from pneumonia that developed in the context of AIDS [13] [14] [15] . His widow died during the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 , while aboard flight AA-11 [16] .
He was cremated and buried in the Los Angeles cemetery and there is an inscription on his urn. Do not fence my grave.
