Kannara ( Kannada , self-name - Kannadiga ) is a people in South India , the main population of the state of Karnataka . They also live in adjacent areas of the states of Andhra Pradesh , Maharashtra , Tamil Nadu and in large cities. The total number is about 45 million people. (1970 - about 22 million, 1988 - about 32 million)

According to the anthropological type they are heterogeneous, most are representatives of the South Indian (Dravidian) race, a significant part has a Caucasoid impurity.
Language - Kannada , refers to the Dravidian languages, has its own written language and literature. Telugu , Marathi , Tamil languages are widespread in the border areas of the range of settlement.
The predominant religion is Hinduism ; Part of Kannar also professes Jainism , Christianity , Sunni Islam (the latter - mainly in cities).
