John Gilbert Evildsen ( Eng. John Guilbert Avildsen ; December 21, 1935 - June 16, 2017 [2] ) is an American film director , largely famous for the films " Rocky " and " Rocky 5 ". For the first film in this series, Evildsen won an Oscar for best director. Evildsen also filmed three parts of the film “ Karate Boy ”. For his role in his second film, Save the Tiger , Oscar was won by actor Jack Lemmon .

Biography

Evildsen was born in Oak Park (Illinois) , the son of Ivey (nee Guilber) and Clarence John Evildsen. [3] He studied at Hotchkiss School (privately in The Hotchkiss School ) in Lakeville ( Lichfield County, Connecticut) and New York University . He began his film career as an assistant director in the films of Arthur Penn and Otto Preminger . The first success, John Evildsen achieved with a low-budget thriller "Joe" (1970) , which received critical acclaim for the game, Peter Boyle and received moderate box office.

This was followed by another success with critics. The drama " Save the Tiger " in 1973 was nominated for three Oscars and won the award for best male role of Jack Lemmon . Both “Joe” and “Save the Tiger” were about losers, but then Evildsen began making films about winners. Evildsen achieved the greatest success with the film “ Rocky ” (1976), having received ten Oscar nominations and won three of them, including for the best film and the best director. Later he shot the film " Rocky V " (1990), which, as planned, was to be the last in the series about Rocky Balboa . Among his other films, ”(1971),“ Restless Neighbors ”(1981) and 3 films of the“ Karate Guy ”series.

Death

June 16, 2017 in Los Angeles at the age of 81, John Evildsen passed away. According to his son, Anthony Evildsen, the cause of death was pancreatic cancer , which Evildsen Sr. has struggled with in recent years [5] .
