History
Opole is one of the oldest cities in Poland. The city is located in the historical region of Upper Silesia and from the Middle Ages until the beginning of the 20th century was its capital. The first mention of Opole dates back to 845. According to archaeological excavations, the first Slavic settlements appeared on Ostrowek - the northern part of the island of Paseka, located in the middle of the Odra River.
Until 1945, the city was part of Germany under the name Oppeln. January 24, 1945 was taken by the advancing Soviet troops of the First Ukrainian Front and subsequently transferred to the Potsdam Conference by Poland.
